Artist: Little Green Men CD: "Blood of the Young" (P.K. Webberley Music) By: Erik Deckers / Indie-Music.com Intro/general thoughts: I'd been hearing about them for a few months, ever since I got on their mailing list, so I didn't know what to expect when I finally got my hands on Little Green Men's sophomore CD, "Blood of the Young." But I knew I was looking forward to it. I wasn't disappointed either. Little Green Men is a hard-driving, electrifying, alternative, sometimes dark sounding rock band from Washington. Combining wailing guitars (almost Joe Satriani sounding at times), intoxicating drum rhythms, and Pam Webberley's raw, powerful voice, Little Green Men makes the listener do more than just hear the music. They stir up your down-deep emotions and make you actually feel it. Type of music: Alternative/Rock Hometown: Olympia, Washington Notable: "Invisible," the last track on this album, has had repeated airplay on KISW, "Seattle's best rock station." Highs: "Blood of the Young" could be the Grimm's Tale of the 20th century-something parents play for their children to make them behave. Whether the song is written to scare little kids. Or to remind Gen-Xers that they're really not invincible, the song will certainly give everyone a reason to check under their bed at night. Another high: Bruce Whitcomb's bass work. Most bassists are considered good if they don't do a poor job, but rarely do they standout as a kick-ass bassist. Whitcomb is one of them. His thumping and grooving bass lines adds a heavy rock element to LGM's music. Low: The CD itself-billed as a full-length album-was only 7 tracks, and 31:50 long. This can be a problem, since it's not much longer than an EP. Most indie EP's don't get a lot of attention from labels or radio stations, and this album's length puts it in danger of being lumped in (and incorrectly ignored) by decision makers. Favorite Lines: From "Blood of the Young," there' nothing like a positive, calming message to cheer up those Gen-Xers: If you take this trip alone, you might die tonight If you lie alone in this place, you could die tonight There's enemies there You'd better beware |
